Chalk is the oat cloth taken through an oxygen bleach, which stops short of a true white. A hard white would need optical brighteners, and those wash out unevenly over a couple of years - so we do not use them.
Because it has been bleached, chalk shows less colour movement between batches than the dyed shades, and it is the one we recommend if you plan to add pieces later.
