Linenlumas began in 2016 with one bolt of 165 gsm flax from a Vilnius mill and a question: why does every linen shop online sell “luxury linen” without saying how heavy it is or how many times it has been washed? Those two numbers decide whether you will like the cloth. Nobody was printing them.
So we print them. Every page gives the weight in grams per square metre, the number of pre-washes, and the town the piece was made in. We sell one fibre because it is the only way to know it well enough to say those things with confidence.
Ten years on the range has grown from bedding to the table, the window, the kitchen and the wardrobe, but the bolt count has only gone from one to four.
Linum usitatissimum
The flax belt runs from Caen to the Dutch border, and it is where most of the world's long-fibre flax is grown. Sown in March, in flower for a fortnight in June, pulled whole in July and left lying in rows to ret. A wet late summer gives a softer, greyer fibre; a dry one gives a stronger, more golden fibre. We buy from both years and blend, which keeps the oat shade steady.
Spinning, weaving, dyeing and laundering all happen at one mill on the edge of Vilnius that has worked flax since the 1960s. The 130 gsm sheer is wet-spun for smoothness; the 240 gsm curtain cloth is dry-spun for body. Bedding and table linen are also hemmed here, and every piece goes through the mill's laundry once, twice or three times before it is packed.
Garments, aprons and bread bags are cut and sewn by a workshop of eleven people in Kaunas, about an hour away. They also do our repairs under the 60-wash promise, which is why a repaired seam comes back matching the original.
Blends, because we cannot then say what the cloth will do. Anything above 240 gsm, because it stops behaving like linen. Blackout curtains, because linen is a woven fibre and light gets through — we will tell you to line the dense panel instead.
A bounded commitment we can actually keep, rather than a lifetime one we would have to hedge.
Any seam, hem, button, tie or drawstring that fails within the first 60 washes. We repair it or replace the piece.
We do, both ways, inside the EU. For the UK, Switzerland and Norway we refund the outbound postage against a receipt.
Scorches, tears on a sharp edge, stains, ordinary fading of dyed shades, or shrinkage from a 90 °C wash. The care page explains how to avoid each.
Email a photograph of the fault and your order reference. You will have a reply, and usually a returns label, within one working day.
We still repair for the cost of postage while we stock the cloth. Replacement buttons are free for as long as we make the piece.
